JA Canada is proud to celebrate the success of the 2023-2024 World of Choices Skilled Trades Summits, an innovative initiative aimed at inspiring youth to explore rewarding careers in skilled trades. As the need for trade professionals continues to grow across Canada, these summits provide students with the tools, knowledge, and hands-on experiences to navigate potential career paths in this vital sector.
Read more about Mark Beckles’ insights here.
We’re grateful to RBC Future Launch for their support in fueling skilled trades education, helping embed these programs in the fabric of JA’s career readiness offering. And we are immensely appreciative of Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) for their invaluable contributions as Summit Hosts and resource contributors for the JA Career Exploration Centre.
The summits provided a space for students to get exposed to:
The World of Choices Skilled Trades Summits directly align with Canada’s growing demand for skilled trade professionals. By providing young people with the guidance and resources to explore these paths, JA Canada is helping to ensure a strong, diverse, and skilled workforce for the future.
As we look ahead, JA Canada is excited to expand the reach of these summits, with plans to bring the program to even more communities in the coming year, helping youth across the country unlock new career possibilities in skilled trades.
And now, students can learn about skilled trades careers on their own or as a class through the JA virtual Career Exploration Center.
Contact your local JA office to learn about how you can participate in Skilled Trades Summits and World of Choices this year!
JA Canada is excited to celebrate the success of our flagship work readiness program: World of Choices. Through this initiative, we’re empowering youth to explore diverse career opportunities and make informed decisions about their future. Through a series of interactive panels, workshops, career mentor sessions, career fairs, and networking sessions, students connected with industry professionals from a wide range of sectors, gaining valuable insight into the skills and pathways needed to succeed in today’s evolving job market.
The impact of World of Choices events has been profound, with students from across Canada reporting a deeper understanding of the career options available to them and the skills required to pursue those careers. In 2023-2024.
As JA Canada continues to bridge the gap between education and the workforce, World of Choice has proven to be a transformative experience for students, particularly those from underserved and equity-seeking communities. By introducing them to a variety of industries and empowering them with the confidence to pursue their dreams, these events help build a more inclusive and prepared future workforce.
As we move forward, JA Canada is excited to continue expanding World of Choices events, ensuring that even more students across the country are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and connections they need to navigate their future careers successfully.
Contact your local JA office to learn more about the World of Choices events in 2024-2025 and how they are preparing youth for success in the workforce.
RBC and RBC Foundation have been long-time partners of JA in Canada, supporting the development and scaling of career readiness programs aimed at equipping youth for the future of work. RBC’s partnership has specifically enabled JA Canada to focus on the trades. In the Spring of 2024, The Globe and Mail interviewed Mark Beckles, Vice President, Social Impact and Innovation at RBC to learn more about the partnership. Read on for the interview to learn how together we are empowering youth with the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in their careers through World of Choices and Skilled Trades Summits.
The goal of RBC Future Launch is to prepare young people for the future of work and specifically the jobs of tomorrow. That stems from the fact that we recognize Canada’s economic prosperity and future is directly linked to the extent to which we can prepare young people to succeed in an ever-changing global economy.
We recognize when young people succeed, Canada succeeds; and that by investing in young people and equipping them with skills for a thriving future, we can ensure Canada's economic prosperity.
For the past decade, Canada’s GDP growth has trailed its G7 competitors due in part to the mismatch between the skills young people are graduating with from college and universities and the kinds of skills and experiences needed to super-charge our key productive sectors. By ensuring that young people have access to those skills and opportunities and know where they are, they can transition from school to work and find meaningful employment in the process, and if we do this well, we will have empowered Canadian youth in the way in which we intend.
RBC Future Launch is focused on three priority pillars. The first pillar is skills development. The notion of skills development and helping young people gain relevant skills, knowledge and credentials to better position themselves for the future really aligns to the World of Choices program and is core to what RBC Future Launch is all about.
The second is networking and helping young people to connect with the right relationships, mentors and resources to grow and sustain their network. And the third is practical work experience and helping young people understand different job experiences and build opportunities to showcase their own talent. When you think of networking skills and practical experience that really aligns well to JA Canada's World of Choices program.
There is a lack of understanding and awareness of the role that skilled trades play in helping to fuel Canada’s economic prosperity and moreover, there is a lack of education and exposure to what those opportunities look like. There is a real deficit in terms of the number of skilled tradespeople that are able to help advance and drive competitiveness in the Canadian economy.
When you break it down by demographic; in addition to there being a lack of skills trades professionals across the country, there's also under representation in terms of BIPOC youth and women, in particular.
Then you add the intersection of green skills and skills trades and as we move toward a greener economy, we acknowledge that skills trades professionals need to develop new skills as you think about creating infrastructure to support electric vehicles or retrofits for homes that are trying to green their environments.
Those are some of the reasons why we’re emphasizing skills trades and why we’re doing it now.
We are proud of the outcomes that we hear directly from the program participants. When you hear directly from the program beneficiaries that they found value in the learning opportunity, that’s when you know that the partnership is working well. Particularly among diverse youth and women, hearing them talk about actively considering a career in skills trades to secure Canada’s future prosperity is really powerful. And it’s all the more inspiring when they tell us that through practical work experience, they’ve been able to transition into the trades whether now apprenticing or taking a college program in plumbing, electrical, or carpentry. These examples of people pursuing the skilled trades with a sense of pride and intentionality, and who are making a really good living demonstrate that we are contending with the stigma around skills trades, and changing the perspective of how skilled trades are perceived.
RBC’s new Purpose Framework defines the societal challenges that RBC Foundation wants to help address. With a rapidly changing workforce, we will help equip people with skills for a thriving future. We want to ensure that youth feel more empowered for the jobs of tomorrow and support them as they access jobs that secure them financially, secure their families financially and secure their communities financially.
When surveyed, nearly 80 per cent of young people ages 18 – 29 told us that they felt better prepared for the future of work. Outcomes from the World of Choices program contributed significantly to that state of preparedness. That’s how we know that these programs are working and having the desired outcomes.
The World of Choices program supports general career exploration and provides the ability to scale programs that are focused on the skilled trades and allows young people to attend summits or learn through the online skills trades content center. It is phenomenal what this program delivers and that it is having the impact that we believe aligns to the larger goal of preparing young people for the future of work. Congratulations to JA for standing up this impactful program!

"The growth I have seen in many students is exponential. I always tell them to apply YOGO WYPI to their company program experience—You Only Get Out, What You Put In. Therefore, go outside your comfort zone, so that you will grow, enhance existing skillsets, and acquire and develop new skillsets to benefit your future.
I have enjoyed my 25 companies, and it is so gratifying when I hear a student say, I didn’t know what I wanted to do after Grade 12, and thanks to my JA experience, I am now headed for post-secondary to obtain my Commerce degree. Many students stay connected and that is also further heart-warming, as I learn about where their future has taken them applying what they learned from their JA experience. I believe this is the best real-life, relevant class for students in high school (next to Financial Literacy) to benefit their future endeavors."
-Margot Arnold
How long have you been incorporating JA Company Program into your classroom?
I have been teaching for 23 years at the end of June 2024. I have taught Entrepreneurship since 2002 and incorporated the Junior Achievement Program into my Ent. 30 class since 2014.
A former Entrepreneurship teacher then working for the Ministry of Education, arranged a meeting with me to discuss this option.
I have never gone back to textbook and assignment/project base. The hands-on, real-life experience provides an invaluable experience for the students.
How may JA Company Program teams have you supported/mentored over the years?
I have supported/mentored 25 Junior Achievement companies--this semester is my last and 25th company.
What types of businesses have your students developed? Do you have any highlights that you can share?
Students often ask me, which was your favorite? I reply all of them! The ideas for JA products have varied over the years and many were unique. JA SK has annual Business Hall of Fame Awards. Several of the JA companies listed below have won numerous awards including Product Design.
What skills have you seen your students develop or further enhance by participating in JA Company Program?
The skills the students have developed, enhanced, and acquired are dependent on what they put into the company. It is so rewarding to see the growth from the beginning of the semester until the end.
What do you feel is the biggest takeaway students gain from the program?
I believe one of the biggest takeaways for students is learning how to work respectively with everyone. The companies are comprised of such varying personalities, which may clash sometimes, and you have to learn to make it work. Also, students can easily see this program as one which so many life skills occur. Teamwork, Communication, Organization, Leadership are all areas where I have observed students grow from the beginning to the end of the semester.
Do you have any students quotes you can share?
“Thanks to Junior Achievement, I am currently planning to pursue a career in business after high school.”
“The Junior Achievement Program has taught me hands-on what running a business is all about. It is a unique program that lets young adults experience more than just questions out of a textbook.”
“The Junior Achievement Program was an incredible experience, and I learned more than I ever imagined about business and how to apply it to real-life.”
“Junior Achievement gave me a real sense of business and responsibility.”
“Junior Achievement gave me the confidence that I can be a business leader of tomorrow.”
Do you have any words of wisdom to share with those who may be thinking of supporting JA Company Program in their classroom?
I believe the Junior Achievement program is invaluable. It is a “real life” hands-on class where students repeatedly say it was their best class in high school. I encourage my students to not only make a PROFIT, but to make a DIFFERENCE! Ten percent of their company profits must be donated to a charity/non-profit of the company’s choice. To date, without the 25th company’s donation, the WCS Junior Achievement program has donated $17,625.47 back to charities and non-profits.
A huge thank you to Margot for her time and dedication to the JA Company Program!
Over the past few weeks, JA Company Program teams have been competing in the Canadian Company of the Year Championship. We're delighted to share that this year's champion is Deckorous from JA Southern Alberta.
Congratulations to all the teams! The judges were highly impressed with this year's presentations. Your hard work and dedication were truly evident!
This year's championship event took place virtually. The emcee was JA Alumni Liam MacDougall from New Brunswick. The event started with an entrepreneurs panel discussion featuring Rene Fritsch, Senior Consultant at Deloitte and intrapreneur; Keegan Sharp, Vice President of Mortgages Growth at Neo Financial; and Kyra Young, Partner Manager at Shopify and Founder & CEO of Kyra's Shea Medleys.
Each of the finalist teams had a presentation prepared which was followed by a Q&A session by the judges.
You can see a recording of the event below.

Jenna Knupp JA Canada
Tell us about your JA company and your role within the company?
My name is Jenna Knupp, and I was a co-president for Sweets & Treats Co, for the junior achievement program at Weyburn Comprehensive School. Sweets & Treats Co was a retail food company that focused on selling a variety of treats including chocolate covered pretzels in two flavors white and milk chocolate, Christmas crunch which was a chocolate covered popcorn snack mix, fudge pops in two flavors maple and chocolate and fudge in two main flavors maple and chocolate. Fudge was our main focus, so as well in January we did a specialty fudge promotion that included six new flavors of fudge Orange Chocolate Swirl, Mint Chocolate Swirl, Vanilla, Vanilla M&M, Chocolate Chip Swirl and our fan favorite Cookies & Cream. Our company was extremely successful, bringing in $18,135.69 in sales with $12,500.00 in profit. Myself alone I brought in $3,794.20 in sales, which represented 24.5% of the company’s total revenue.
Our company was proud to donate $1,389.20 to the Andon Hoff Memorial fund as a way to give back to our community. Our company was very successful, and I am so proud of all we accomplished. Since my JA experience has come to an end, I decided to use all the skills I learned to start my own business.
My fudge company is called “Jenna’s Sweet Shop” and hope to expand my fudge flavor pallet and market my product in memory of my grandma who was also a fudge entrepreneur.
What did you learn by participating in the JA Company Program?
Junior Achievement taught me so many valuable lessons that I will take with into my post-secondary education and my future career. I was constantly being asked questions and being asked to come up with solutions to any problems that came to the surface. I would evaluate situations and resolve conflict between my peers on a daily basis. I also learned how different personalities mix together to create a team. Everyone has value and needs to be treated with respect. Each person brings something different to the table, some personalities might be more outgoing and energetic, while others might be more calm and thoughtful. When you combine all of the different aspects you can create a well-rounded team that can tackle any challenge thrown their way.
No matter how stressful the situation was or how overwhelmed I felt I made sure to have constant resilience and to always bring a positive attitude to class each day. I was nominated for salesperson of the year, achiever of the year and president of the year by my peers. This experience has put me in a real workplace environment and showed me that I can handle a lot more than I thought I could. Alongside junior achievement, I also played on the school basketball team. Maintaining my grades was especially important to me, so I had to be mindful of how I used my time. I worked hard to create a balance between academics, sports, and my leadership role. Which is a skill I am thankful to have learned from junior achievement.
Would you recommend this program to other students?
Junior achievement is a wonderful program that helps young adults start early in the business world. If you are interested in anything business or entrepreneurship related the JA program is the perfect class to take. JA didn’t only give me new knowledge in business but also left me with new lifelong friends. I would recommend the JA program to all other students as it doesn’t only give you business knowledge but also new skillsets like teamwork, multitasking, communication and critical thinking. All these skills can be used in any job, not only business-related jobs, so I recommend everyone take part in the Junior achievement program.

In the spring of 2023, The Globe and Mail interviewed Dawn de Lima, Executive Vice-President, Corporate Services of TC Energy and Chair of the Board for JA Canada. Please see the full interview below to learn how TC Energy has been a strong supporter of JA Canada for more than two decades!
TC Energy has been partnering with JA Canada for more than 20 years. Over that time, we’ve invested more than $900,000 into various programs and initiatives, and countless volunteer hours from our employees. Recently, through our Social Impact Program Build Strong, TC Energy has supported JA Canada’s Digital Transformation Project: JA Campus. This has been an exciting program for us, as it brings JA programming to students across Canada, and creates more opportunities for reaching and engaging a diverse student group. We have also expanded our support to include the development of a new Virtual Career Fair portal. This new portal will create a destination for students to navigate career opportunities and visit different centres dedicated to diverse careers such as skilled trades, finance, energy and technology.
Innovation is a core value at TC Energy. As a team of 7,000+ energy problem solvers - we are restlessly innovative. As we work to move, generate and store the energy North America relies on, having an innovation mindset is the key to unlocking a more sustainable and more secure energy future. JA’s digital learning initiatives are reaching more youth, from communities that would have otherwise not had access to programs. The social impact TC Energy seeks to have by investing in JA’s digital learning initiatives is to build the next generation of energy problem solvers and improve access and reach of innovative programming.
Now more than ever, the world needs big thinkers. Solving today, and tomorrow’s energy challenges will require bright, open, and curious minds to help us look at problems differently and contribute unique solutions through their work. Empowering the next generation of energy problem solvers through our Social Impact program, Build Strong, is about inspiring the bright minds of today, to help us develop tomorrow’s energy solutions.
We’ve already seen the impact of the adaptive delivery model through our earlier investments in JA digital’s learning initiatives. Being able to evolve our Build Strong investment and take it one step further by supporting the development of the TC Energy Career Centre will introduce students to the exciting possibilities of a career in energy to students across Canada.
At TC Energy, we’re looking for people who bring innovative ideas and a unique perspective. The TC Energy Career Centre will highlight what it looks like to help solve some of the world’s most pressing energy problems and bring the perspectives of our employees directly to students. Our employees will help us deliver aspects of the program through mentorship opportunities and showcasing energy careers.
The TC Energy Career Centre will equip future energy problem solvers with career skills and provide experiential learning opportunities in a new and innovative way. We want to create a destination for students to discover a career that they might not have realized was even possible. With access to experiential learning opportunities at the students’ fingertips, we’re helping to expand the reach and increase the access to those not traditionally reached through JA events.

The Canadian Business Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to recognize exceptional and visionary business leaders for their contributions to the economic development and prosperity of Canada.
Each year, individuals are nominated by their peers and are chosen by an independent selection committee representing Canada’s foremost private sector, academic and media institutions convened by Korn Ferry, the official CBHF Selection Partner.
The annual CBHF Induction Ceremony and Celebration is the signature fundraising event for Junior Achievement of Canada (JA Canada). Proceeds support JA Canada’s mission to develop and deliver financial health, work readiness and entrepreneurship programs that equip youth with the skillset and mindset for success.
“We are grateful to the Companions of the Business Hall of Fame who serve as role models for aspiring young Canadian entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders,” said Scott Hillier, CEO of JA Canada.” The 2024 Inductees join an extraordinary group of individuals who were enshrined in earlier years. Their legacies inspire the next generation.”
JA welcomes members of the business community and leaders from across the country to the CBHF Induction Ceremony and Celebration event in May. Sponsorship, tickets and the opportunity to donate in honour of the Inductees are now available. CALGARY, Alberta & WINNIPEG, Manitoba, November 28, 2023. Neo Financial (Neo), a leading Canadian financial technology company, and Junior Achievement of Canada (JA Canada), a renowned youth financial education organization, have launched the JA Knowledge Hub—powered by Neo.
With November marking Financial Literacy Month and many Canadians facing increased financial pressures, the JA Knowledge Hub offers financial literacy learning resources designed for teens and available for all ages. This digital library aims to address gaps in financial literacy that contribute to the financial challenges facing Canadians.
Delivered through the JA Knowledge Hub, JA Canada’s financial education expertise — which already reaches more than 341,000 youth annually through immersive JA programs and learning experiences — will provide bite-sized, interactive content on topics including:
● How to manage money: Spending and budgeting, methods of payment, and banking basics
● Where your money goes: Understanding taxes, credit card interest, and debt
● Making money work for you: Saving, investing, and setting smart financial goals
● Protecting your money: Keeping your data safe, safe spending, security and passwords, planning for financial uncertainty
The announcement builds on the recent launch of the JA Money card—powered by Neo, a debit card alternative that enables teens from the age of 13 to take control of their finances in a safe, secure, and educational environment2.
Research shows that financial literacy in Canada is a significant concern. According to MNP, only 15% of Canadians believe they have strong financial literacy skills, and 39% of Canadians rank their financial literacy knowledge as “poor”.
“JA Canada’s volunteers and staff across the country do vital work to prepare youth for the challenges they’ll face as they transition to financial independence. The JA Knowledge Hub, developed in partnership with Neo, is an exciting new resource for young Canadians to develop the skills and knowledge required to set and achieve sound financial goals,” said Scott Hillier, CEO, JA Canada. “We’re proud to be working with Neo as a trusted partner in this effort to empower the next generation to build a better financial future.”
“As an alum of Junior Achievement’s education programs, I’m thrilled to work with JA Canada to expand their reach and help even more young Canadians achieve their financial goals,” said Andrew Chau, CEO of Neo Financial. “The JA Knowledge Hub is the latest way that Neo and JA are innovating to deliver an educational and rewarding financial experience for Canadian youth.”

Last year, Gaia was named the 2022 Canadian Company of the Year Champion. Team Gaia had the opportunity to participate in JA Entrepreneurship Summit in Washington, D.C. this past June. The following four team members participated in this event: Harriet Li, Sandy Iligan, Ayaan Merchant, and Corina Chan.
"Among delivering such applicable content to young individuals, I really love how JA engages with students no matter type of person that enters the program. I feel that, not a lot of students have the opportunity in life to learn about business or finances. Junior Achievement is so influential in the way that it bridges this gap and creates connections between passion and entrepreneurship." Harriet Li
The summit included four days of learning and business planning at Finance Park, which led up to a final pitch competition held at The University of Maryland. Each day started with guest speakers, where students had to identify characteristics of an entrepreneur based on their story. A speaker that really stood out to us was Justin Drummond who left his D1 basketball career to pursue a career in entrepreneurship, investing in his many businesses.
Each day included different seminars and activities that focused on the key aspects of developing a business- finances, marketing, pitching, business plans, and more. After reflecting on the week, Team Gaia felt it was almost like an intensive JA Company Program that effectively delivers the JA curriculum about entrepreneurship.
At the end of each day, the team had time to work on their business ideas and refine their pitch.
As part of the final pitch competition, there were 10 teams who had an assigned theme: pollution and sustainability, mental health, climate change, homelessness, or physical health. Teams would have roughly 5-8 students. The participants from Team Gaia were each placed on different teams, allowing them to network and meet new people.
The first place team had climate change as their theme and their company name was Eco-Excursions. Sandy from Team Gaia was on the winning team:
"We developed an app that aims to bring together a diverse range of eco-friendly transportation options, sustainable hotel bookings, and environmentally conscious food choices. The app will incorporate a point system, allowing users to earn points for engaging in sustainable activities. These points can be later redeemed for gift cards and discounts at local businesses, encouraging users to stay within the city and reduce their carbon footprint. Furthermore, the platform will have a vibrant community feature, enabling users to interact with like-minded individuals and share their efforts in combating climate change."
Earlier this year, Jeffrey Nold, Director of Employee Engagement and Partnerships with CIBC was interviewed as part of a piece with The Globe and Mail. Please see the full interview below to learn more about why the CIBC Foundation sees value in supporting JA Canada.
CIBC has supported JA since 1965. We became a National Partner in 2020, and have been proud partners of JA ever since. Our goal is to provide tools and resources to help strengthen financial education and knowledge in our society . We invest in initiatives that help people develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of financial wellbeing.
We are a National Partner of JA Economics for Success - financial education and economics program for grade 7 and 8 students. We also support JA Company Program – JA’s flagship after-school program program created for high school students to start their own business. With the help of a student group and volunteer mentors, students create, manage and liquidate a business over a 4 month program.
We also support JA fundraising initiatives, Business Hall of Fame events and JA Company Program award celebrations.
As part of our commitment to JA, our team members volunteer their time to deliver financial education workshops across the country to help make the ambitions of these students a reality.
Giving and volunteering are shared passions at our bank, rooted in our genuinely caring culture and our focus on helping people realize their ambitions. Our program reflects Team CIBC’s tremendous passion for giving and volunteering to help strengthen the communities in which we live and work. Over 200 CIBC team members in Canada and the U.S. volunteered over 1,000 hours and delivered 123 programs with Junior Achievement last year. Our team volunteers for the Economics for Success program and the Company program. Our employees enjoy engaging with the youth and sharing their experiences.
Through a combination of our partnership and CIBC volunteer engagement, we reach over 14,500 students annually. In 2022, CIBC Bank USA was awarded the Above and Beyond Award for Team CIBC’s volunteerism with Junior Achievement in Chicago Public Schools.
Mentoring can provide volunteers with the opportunity to meet and connect with other mentors, mentees, and professionals in their field. This can lead to new opportunities and collaboration.
Effective mentoring requires a combination of personal qualities, skills and experience. Some of the key qualities and skills required are empathy and understanding; respect for diversity and inclusion; communication and interpersonal skills. We want every young person to reach their full potential.
Engaging with professionals and career mentors can give students the opportunity to learn from those who have firsthand experience in their field of interest. This can help students gain insights into the industry and gain a better understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.
Through our corporate and employee community initiatives, we support and remove barriers to ambition for next generation leaders through greater access to education and employment outcomes.

Over the past few weeks, JA Company Program teams have been competing in the Canadian Company of the Year Championship. We're delighted to share that this year's champion is Wonder from JA Central Ontario.
Congratulations to all the teams. The judges were most impressed with this year's presentations. It was clear that a lot of hard work and dedication was achieved this year!
This year's championship event took place virtually. The emcee was JA Alumna Sofia Lopez from JA British Columbia. The event started with a fireside chat with Jeff Adamson of Neo Financial who inspired the crowd with his experience in entrepreneurship. Each of the finalist teams had a presentation prepared which was followed by a Q&A session by the judges.
You can see a recording of the event below.
During the championship event, the winners of the Best Store Builder Award of the Year were announced. JA Company Program teams who used a Shopify store this year, qualified for the award. Shopify judged each of the stores to determine the winner.
This year's Best Store Builders of the Year Include:
Last week, JA Company Program teams from across Canada participated in the preliminary rounds of the Canadian Company of the Year Championship. They competed in one of the three categories: manufacturing & retail, technology and social venture.
These were closed sessions with a panel of judges. The students gave a 5-minute presentation about their business and experience throughout the JA Company Program followed by a Q&A session. Our judges had the very difficult task of selecting a top team in each category, as all the presentations were well done!
These three teams make up the finalists for the championship event on July 20th. They'll each participate in a live virtual event where they'll do their presentation followed by a Q&A with another panel of judges. The event will also include a keynote speaker and insights from a JA Alumna as the emcee.
The winning team will be given the title of Company of the Year and will be nominated to represent Canada at the JA Americas' Company of the Year Competition in the late fall (more details to come).
If you're looking for details about the event on July 20th, please reach out to Angela Scott at ascott@jacanada.org.
We're delighted to share the news of the 2023 national JA student award winners. This year, three awards were available to students across Canada who actively participated in the JA Company Program!

Awarded to a student who developed and demonstrated leadership skills through their JA experience.
JA Company Program Community Award
Awarded to a student who demonstrated how they used their JA experience to contribute to building a better community.
The Seymour Schulich Entrepreneurship Scholarship

We’re proud to announce that JA Worldwide has been nominated for the 2023 Nobel PeacePrize, the second such honor in two years. JA Canada is a member of JA Worldwide.
Nominations may be received only from heads of state and certain elected officials, university professors in selected fields, past Nobel laureates, and a few other notable individuals. We were approached throughout the last year by a number of eligible nominators and, although the identity of each nominee officially remains anonymous for 50 years, we know that at least one of those nominations was accepted by the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. There may have been more.
Founded 104 years ago, JA is now one of the largest youth-serving NGOs in the world, delivering over15 million student learning experiences for employment and entrepreneurship in the last year alone. Operating in over 100 countries, JA teaches youth to develop the skillset and mindset to create businesses, find meaningful employment, and build thriving communities.
Thanks to what they learn in JA, students develop ambitions beyond their own economic reward, with young people understanding that entrepreneurship is not only a means to healthy finances for themselves and their families but also a vehicle to cultivate social stability and build healthy communities. JA students and alumni create companies that offer products and services that fill a consumer need; enable an ecosystem of employees, partners, and suppliers to thrive; and also fundamentally transform the world, or at least their small corner of it.
Asheesh Advani, CEO of JA Worldwide, shared his perspective in response to the nomination: “Peace is possible only when youth in all countries and regions have economic empowerment. By creating opportunity, prosperity, and self-belief, JA’s work empowers youth in over 100countries with the skillset and mindset to build thriving communities. For over a century, JA has operated in areas of political instability, violence, and war, helping youth build entrepreneurship skills and economic resilience. For this work, JA Worldwide is recognized year after year as one of the top ten NGOs in the world, providing economic empowerment to millions of young people.”
Between 1901 and 2022, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to 140 laureates, including 110 individuals and 30 organizations. Among those 30 organizations is another organization from the annual list of top ten NGOs, Médecins sans Frontières (DoctorsWithout Borders), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. UNICEF, another youth-serving NGO, was awarded the prize in 1965, after being nominated for several years.

TORONTO, Dec. 6, 2022 /CNW/ - Junior Achievement of Canada (JA Canada) is pleased to announce a new national three-year collaboration impacting more than 230,000 Canadian youth.
Zurich Canada, the Z Zurich Foundation and JA Canada have enjoyed a long-standing meaningful relationship focused on equipping youth with financial literacy, career readiness and entrepreneurship skills.
"At Zurich Canada, we are committed to supporting the communities in which we live and work", said Saad Mered, CEO, Zurich Canada. "Working alongside the Z Zurich Foundation, we are excited to collaborate with JA Canada to combine resources and expertise to foster positive youth connection and develop foundational mental well-being skills."
Earlier this fall, JA Worldwide released its new brand and refined vision statement: a world in which young people have the skillset and mindset to build thriving communities. As a leader in youth business education and entrepreneurship, JA Canada is looking to leverage its platform, learning experiences and student network to integrate mental well-being education and skills in JA programs.
"Our mental well-being collaboration with Zurich Canada is directly aligned with our goal to support youth in developing the mindset for life, academic and career success," said Scott Hillier, CEO, JA Canada. "We are grateful for Z Zurich Foundation and Zurich Canada's collaboration and investment," said Hillier.
With Z Zurich Foundation's investment, JA Canada will promote and build awareness of the critical importance of youth mental well-being and resiliency through an array of activities targeted at youth between the ages of 12 and 17, and their educators and caregivers.
"By working upstream with aspiring young entrepreneurs, and students beginning their career exploration, we can help develop life-long skills to promote mental health," said Scott Hillier, CEO, JA Canada.
With the guidance and engagement of a collaborative advisory group of leading mental health partners, a youth council, and a program development working group, JA Canada is embarking on the development of a unique suite of program activities which will become established components of JA Canada's programming.
"The engagement of mental health partners is a critical component of the initiative, ensuring the development of evidence-based, youth-centered content to enhance and support mental well-being," said Jennifer James, VP Programs, JA Canada.
Key activities include: youth webinars/courses and online professional development for educators which will be released early in 2023; the redevelopment of JA Success Skills Program for classrooms across the country available in the spring of 2023; and the integration of mental well-being and resiliency modules in JA Company Program, JA's signature youth entrepreneurship program.
JA and Zurich Canada, in partnership with the Mental Health Partners Advisory Group also look forward to providing youth with unique and transformational experiential learning opportunities by hosting Youth Summits and moreover launching a dynamic Mental Well-Being Youth Challenge fostering promotion, advocacy and self-determination through peer-to-peer engagement.
"Zurich Canada and the Z Zurich Foundation are excited about this multi-stakeholder collaboration, and the opportunity for Zurich employees to serve as program champions and volunteers," said Ray Chaaya, AVP Employee Experience & Culture, Zurich Canada. "Together we can empower young people for future success by helping youth build resilience and equipping them with life skills," said Chaaya.

Toronto, Dec. 1, 2022 – JA Canada is pleased to announce a renewed three-year collaboration with TD Bank Group (TD). This generous support will empower more than 90,000 youth across Canada with the skills they need to live a financially healthy future by participating in the Dollars with Sense program.
Dollars with Sense is a financial literacy program delivered to students in grades 7-9 across Canada. The program curriculum teaches students how to make smart financial decisions, live debt-free, and become savvy investors. Students learn personal money management skills that they can apply to their lives.
“Dollars with Sense is one of JA’s most in-demand and widely delivered programs. “Moreover, TD’s collaboration with our national program development of Dollars with Sense will enable JA to update and inclusively redesign the program increasing accessibility and engagement,” said Hillier.
The redesigned Dollars with Sense program will provide an interactive experience adapted to all learning styles whether students learn in the classroom, with a teacher or volunteer, or independently online at home.

We have recently learned that JA Worldwide has been nominated! This is an incredible honor for the entire JA network, which includes over 340 local offices in 115 countries.
Nominations may only be received from heads of state and certain elected officials, university professors in selected fields, past Nobel laureates, and a few other notable individuals. Although the identity of each nominee is officially to remain anonymous for 50 years, we have received permission to share with you that we were nominated by a distinguished Professor of Law and International Affairs who was impressed by JA’s incredible global reach, our success in delivering economic empowerment to youth at scale, and our ability to find unity in diversity.
For centuries, unemployment and poverty have led to political instability, violence, and war. By economically empowering youth on all continents (even during this pandemic), JA serves a conduit for peace. We envision a world in which young people have the skillset and mindset to build thriving communities. JA has a heritage of impacting the lives of individuals. While we continue to grow and impact individuals at scale, the impact of JA is felt in communities and across countries.
This nomination for JA Worldwide is the beginning of a journey for us. Many organizations have been nominated multiple times before they’ve been shortlisted or selected as a winner. We’re honored and humbled to be considered for the first time alongside such an illustrious group of nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize. And we hope that this honor inspires the JA network to achieve more, maximize our impact, and recognize that there is unity in diversity.
Asheesh Advani, CEO of JA Worldwide, shared his perspective in response to the nomination: “Peace is only possible when youth in all countries and regions have economic empowerment. JA Worldwide is honored to receive this nomination and will continue our work to enable all young people to have the skillset and mindset to build thriving communities. Our primary hope for solving the world’s most complex problems rests in the young people of today who will be the leaders of tomorrow.”
Although all other Nobel prizes are awarded in Sweden, the Nobel Peace Prize is selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, assisted by the Norwegian Nobel Institute, which acts as its secretariat. Grete Nykkelmo, CEO of JA Norway (Ungt Entreprenørskap), responded to the news in this way: “We are delighted to share in this recognition as a proud member of the JA Worldwide network. Our unique blend of entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness enables us to impact individuals, communities, and society. Peace is achieved when young people have economic opportunity, and we are honored that JA has been recognized alongside other nominees that are striving for a more peaceful world.”
For more information, please visit the JA Worldwide website.
We're so proud of all the students, as they've all clearly demonstrated their accomplishments as part of the JA Company Program this past year.
As the JA Americas Company of the Year, MarketAngelo will join the top teams from JA Asia Pacific, JA Europe, JA USA, INJAZ Al-Arab JA MENA, and JA Africa in the second-annual de la Vega Global Entrepreneurship Award competition in early 2022. This is the first global award for JA Company Program student companies.
Volunteers have been an integral partner of JA since our inception in 1955. Whether teaching youth about financial literacy in classrooms or inspiring young entrepreneurs in corporate boardrooms across the country, volunteers have shared their experience and knowledge and set these youth on the path to success.
The pandemic has necessitated a change to JA’s program delivery model but volunteers remain vital partners. Volunteers now may “zoom” into a classroom remotely to facilitate part of a program, speak about their career or participate in a Q&A session with students. They may also provide a pre-recorded video that a teacher can use in the classroom as part of a JA program. Or they may work with an entirely virtual team of students to guide them through Company Program.
An often-overlooked group of volunteers is JA’s governance volunteers – those who serve on Boards of Directors across the country. These individuals give their time, talent and treasure to advance the mission of JA. This has never been more important than in the past year as we’ve navigated through incredible change and uncertainty.
As we look forward to some return to normalcy, volunteer engagement will continue to be an important element of JA’s programs and mission delivery. We’re excited to continue with the new volunteer opportunities that have developed over the last year, as well as returning to in-person classroom involvement when it’s safe to do so.
To all of our volunteers - thank you for your continued commitment!
