Junior Achievement Summer Camp Counsellor Job Description


Position reports to: Program Manager

Junior Achievement is looking for one enthusiastic Summer Camp Counsellor to work with youth ages 8-13 out of the JA Chatham office. The Camp Counsellor will be able to communicate and work well independently/with little direction to educate youth on basic business and entrepreneurial concepts, including developing business products and introducing them to their local community markets. The counsellor will also be expected to work as a team for planning and succession purposes. You must be a full time student currently aged 15-30 returning to school in the fall.


Key Responsibilities


  • Prepare camp materials including, but not limited to: icebreakers, educational games/activities, and any other materials as directed by the Program Manager or Camp Coordinator.
  • Evaluate summer program using feedback forms from children and parents to determine program improvement and alter the program accordingly for following session(s) if possible.
  • Counsellor is responsible for supervising youth at all times and ensuring their safety through all aspects of the camp.
  • Providing leadership and guidance through the process of starting a business including: teaching proper business concepts, using appropriate business terminology, explaining concepts in a clear and suitable manner, bring real-world experiences into the learning environment, and encourage students throughout the process.
  • Accompany youth within the community to sell products to the public.
  • Solve any issues with kids.
  • Coordinators must have an enthusiastic attitude with students, with program content, and throughout the program.


Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Works well in a team environment.
  • A self-starter with excellent communication skills.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent attitude with youth and a desire to teach/educate youth using a variety of tools/methods.
  • Able to problem solve and think critically.
  • Preference will be given to those who have a business-related education/background.
