Sa-Hali Secondary Team Wins Provincial Grand Prize

May 28, 2014 British Columbia

Vancouver, B.C. – On Thursday, May 22nd, students from Sa-Hali Secondary in Kamloops accepted  the Grand Prize award for their participation in Junior Achievement of British Columbia’s first-ever JABC Innovation Jam event.
Students received the award in front of 700 business leaders at the Business Laureates of BC Business Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony in Vancouver. This most recent award is in addition to the Innovation Jam “People’s Choice” distinction the students won in March as a result of a social media contest supported by friends, family and enthusiastic Kamloops supporters. The Sa-Hali Secondary Grand Prize Winners are: Taylor Campbell, Nicholas Hilton, Melissa Pavan, Kaylan Phillips, Megailia Rose, and Sophia de Zeeuw.
As a result of winning the award, the team, along with their business teacher Ishar Litt, returned to Vancouver to be recognized at the prestigious Business Laureates of BC Gala. At the event, the students accepted their award, enjoyed a keynote address by M. Elyse Allan, President and CEO, GE Canada, and witnessed the induction of the 2014 BC Business Hall of Fame Laureates, Dave Lede, Chairman and CEO of the Ledcor Group of Companies; George Melville and Jim Treliving, Chairmen and Owners of Boston Pizza International Inc., and Lucille Johnstone C.M, O.B.C. (1924-2004). The students also received a cash prize.
The Sa-Hali team first participated in the JABC Innovation Jam last January when 120 students from 20 schools across BC came together in Vancouver for a day of creative thinking and competition at Junior Achievement of British Columbia’s (JABC) inaugural event. The workshop and competition challenged and inspired grade 11 and 12 students to THINK BIG about creating the innovative businesses of tomorrow. This intense and exciting event had student teams develop and pitch new business ideas with a focus on environmental sustainability. The Sa-Hali Secondary team presented their idea for a sustainable toothbrush with eco-friendly disposable bristles. The team advanced to the final round where they later won the “People’s Choice” Award for their business pitch video featured on YouTube.
