On Wednesday August 26, JA Canada hosted the 2020 Canadian Company of the Year (COY) championships. The final three teams – 4U, Arriere-Saison and Stackd - were selected the previous week, following competitions in three company categories: manufacturing/retail, social enterprise and technology.
The winning team is Stackd from JA Central Ontario
. Stackd offers a gaming player matchmaking platform and events platform focused on creating safe and inclusive gaming experiences for the next generation gamer.
Company Program provides high school students the opportunity to start, operate and liquidate a small business under the mentorship of volunteers from the business community. The eighteen week program not only provides participants with hands-on experience in sales, marketing and finance, it helps them develop 21st century skills…skills like teamwork, problem-solving, communication and resiliency that are vital to their future success.
Scott Hillier, President & CEO of JA Canada, says “The competition among the teams was close. The students who presented all demonstrated a strong understanding of the various elements of their business, and showcased these in engaging presentations. As part of the Q&A session, judges asked teams about lessons learned during the program. A key element of learning and growth - personally and professionally - comes from reflection. The teams all articulated how they thought critically about challenges, solved problems and pivoted as needed. Thank you to Rogers for sponsoring this important JA program!”
For the last two years, Rogers Communications has provided a Ted Rogers Community Grant to Junior Achievement’s Company Program and is the proud National Supporter of the Canadian CoY championships. Through its community grants, Rogers supports organizations that help young people succeed inside and outside the classroom.
Stackd will go on to represent Canada at the JA Americas Company of the Year Competition, a virtual competition planned for late 2020.
