Volunteering is Life Changing for Everyone
By: Scott Hillier, President and CEO, JA Canada
The data on Canadians approach to volunteering clearly shows our nation’s commitment to giving. The 2010 data Stats Canada shows that 47% of Canadians volunteer, which is equal to over 13 million volunteers.
For JA Canada, we have over 11, 000 committed volunteers who have helped the organization impart financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurial knowledge and tools to help put students on the path to success. These volunteers donate over 177, 650 hours each year to help prepare and inspire our next generation of leaders to own their future success.
Our JA volunteers come from a vast array of workplaces and experiences, but they all have one thing in common - the desire to share their experience and knowledge with students that is essential to helping them succeed in school, in work and in life.
According to Volunteer Canada’s Sector Source report, the top three reasons Canadians volunteer are:
To contribute to community;
To use their skills and experiences; and,
Because there are personally affect by the organization’s cause.
By volunteering with JA, you are able to achieve all of these benefits and so much more. By sharing your knowledge and delivering a JA Program, you are contributing to a student’s personal growth, and the impacts are well beyond the individual impact. This has direct positive and everlasting impact on our communities and country.
The Boston Consulting Group showed that that return on investing to JA is for every $1.00 donated, there is $45.00 direct value to society. Students who go through the JA program save more, earn more money, create jobs and contribute to Canada’s economy. We couldn’t make this kind of impact without the generous support of our volunteers.
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, I would like to thank each and every one of our volunteers. Thank you for your inspiration, your knowledge and your commitment to supporting our next generation of leaders.
